Leopardstown Family Fun Day returns and shows support to Ireland’s top equine and horticultural learning charity Festina Lente

Festina Lente are looking to raise €3 million to help build a new state-of-the-art facility. Pictured at the launch of the fundraising appeal are ambassadors Rachael Blackmore and Nina Carberry.

We are delighted to support their fundraising endeavours so they can continue the incredibly work they do in a brand new, state of the art facility.

Leopardstown Racecourse looks forward to welcoming families back to the South Dublin racecourse on Sunday May 8th for their annual Family Fun Day with returning attractions and the all-new, purpose-built family facilities. The new facilities were part of the €20 redevelopment completed in 2021 and include an indoor and outdoor Kids play area.

As well as an 8 Race card, which features the Group 3 Derby Trial Stakes and The Group 3 Amethyst Stakes; there will also be a jam-packed schedule of entertainment and attractions for all ages, including the return of Waffles the Wonderful, Custard Pie Puppet Shows, Stilt Walkers, Face Painting, large outdoor games, farm petting zoo, the Festina Lente Shetland Parade, the Festina Lente Horticulture Area and the return of the incredibly popular Clayton Hotel Leopardstown Hobby Horse Cup!

The Family Fun Race Day will also feature key education elements with thanks to HRI Racing Juniors; including racing simulator provided by RACE, Front Runner Horse Racing Education, interactive horse grooming, Track Walk with Clerk of the Course and one of Ireland’s top Jockeys, A "Meet the Stars" Jockey Autograph session in the Family Fun Day Marquee and of course plenty of HRI Racing Juniors Goodies for attendees.

Sponsors on the day include hotel partner, Clayton Hotel Leopardstown, Fitzpatrick Agriculture Contractors and a memorial race will be held for the late Captain Dara Fitzpatrick. Festina Lente has also been added as race sponsors of the Fund a New Home for Festina Lente Race which is a welcome addition to the Family Fun Day as Leopardstown hope to assist the charity to reach their target of raising €3 million euro. AsIreland’s top equine and horticultural learning charity for those with special needs; Festina Lente currently homed in Bray, must raise €3 million to secure the purchase of Belfield House and lands in Kilpeddar, County Wicklow to facilitate an essential move and expansion.  

The Charity described as ‘World Class’ is known across the racing industry for its outstanding work in the field of equine assisted learning for those with special needs through a wide range of equine assisted learning programmes.  Currently they employ 60 staff and touch the lives of over 40,000 Irish people each year. Festina Lente will also be adding to the Family Fun activities on the day including interactive fun experiences with their Shetland Ponies, educational quizzes about horses and interactive hands-on horticultural activities encouraging kids of all ages to get involved.

Speaking on the return of Family Fun Day and the addition of Festina Lente, Leopardstown CEO Tim Husbands MBE said; “We are excited to welcome families back to Family Fun Day and experience our new indoor and outdoor kids play area, which was part of our €20 million redevelopment completed in 2021.The range of activities on offer, not to mention the quality 8 race card means we have something for everyone on the day.

Dr Jill Carey, CEO of Festina Lente commented: “We are delighted to be part of the Derby Trial Stakes Race Day on Sunday 8th May and so looking forward to be able to introduce children to the many equine and horticultural activities that we have planned for throughout the day. Festina Lente’s plan is to build a state-of-the-art National Education Centre to continue our current work.  We will be also focussing on re-training and re-purposing racehorses, enabling these animals to have a second career in riding clubs, dressage, show jumping and in certain equine assisted learning programmes.  As part of this, Festina Lente will develop an accredited training programme for equestrians wishing to learn how to look after and work with ex-race horses.”
