Global Multinational Willis Towers Watson Announce Third Year Sponsorship of Group 3 Champions Juvenile Stakes

Day 1 Longines Irish Champions Weekend – Saturday September 9

Leopardstown Racecourse today announced the continued sponsorship of the Group 3 Willis Towers Watson Champions Juvenile Stakes on the opening day of Longines Irish Champions Weekend at Leopardstown on Saturday, September 9.

Moved to strengthen the Champions Day programme at Leopardstown in 2012, the race was won that year by Battle Of Marengo which prevailed over subsequent Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby winner Trading Leather. The following year’s renewal saw Australia come home in front and he was rated the third best racehorse in the world in 2014. Free Eagle was runner-up to Australia and went on to score at the highest level at Royal Ascot the following year. In 2015, Johannes Vermeer, another subsequent Group 1 winner, was the winner of the Willis Towers Watson Champions Juvenile Stakes and he features among the entries for next month’s QIPCO Irish Champion Stakes.  Landfall, ridden by Shane Foley for Curragh trainer Ken Condon, was last year’s winner.

The €100,000 Willis Towers Watson Champions Juvenile Stakes is part of the Breeders’ Cup Challenge ‘Win & You’re In’ series – a series of thoroughbred horse races in the United States, Canada, Europe, Japan, Australia, South Africa and South American in which the winner earns an automatic spot in a specified Breeders’ Cup race.

Pat Keogh, CEO, Leopardstown Racecourse, commented: “We are delighted that Willis Towers Watson are continuing their sponsorship of the Group 3 Willis Towers Watson Champions Juvenile Stakes. It is testament to the international standing of Longines Irish Champions Weekend that such a strong global brand such as Willis Towers Watson are partners and I would like to thank them for their support.”

Brian Curtis, Managing Director – Head of Ireland, Willis Towers Watson, said: “Willis Towers Watson is delighted to be able to continue our association with Leopardstown and the prestigious Irish Champions Weekend.  As a dynamic and respected team in the bloodstock and horseracing insurance industry, we wanted to reflect our commitment to the sport through the continued sponsorship of the Group 3 Willis Towers Watson Champions Juvenile Stakes. We’re looking forward to seeing some of the sports top juveniles contest the race on what should be a spectacular weekend of horse racing.”
