Saturday 14th April
is the second flat meeting of the season at Leopardstown and features top class
racing where the future stars appear. Featuring two Group 3 races, The Ballylinch Stud Priory Belle 1,000 Guineas Trial and The PW McGrath Memorial Ballysax Stakes
and the listed Ballylinch Stud 2000 Guineas Trial there is plenty of
action on the track. The Ballylinch Stud Priory Belle 1,000 Guineas Trial has a successful
history in recent times, in 2016 it was won by Jetsetting who then went on to
win the Irish 1000 Guineas and last year the winner was Hydrangea who then
claimed the Group 1 Coolmore Fastnet Rock Matron Stakes at Leopardstown as part
of Longines Irish Champions Weekend, a race that was rated the top fillies race
in the world in 2017. Runner-up in the The Ballylinch Stud Priory Belle 1,000 Guineas Trial
was the talented filly, Winter, who progressed to win the British & Irish
Guineas alongside two other Group 1 races.
Ballylinch Stud are delighted to announce that not
only will they continue their sponsorship of the 1,000 Guineas Trial Stakes at
Leopardstown this year but they will also be sponsoring the 2,000 Guineas Trial
and taking the naming rights for the day, which will now be known as the
Ballylinch Stud Classic Trials day.
The Ballylinch Stud Priory Belle 1,000 Guineas Trial
has been a stepping stone for recent Guineas heroine’s Virginia Waters,
Homecoming Queen and Jet Setting, while last year’s runner up Winter who was
beaten by subsequent multiple Group 1 winning Hydrangea in a vintage renewal
which produced no less than 7 subsequent individual stakes winners.
The Ballylinch Stud 2,000 Guineas Trial has been
dropped back a furlong to 7 furlongs this year and many of the leading fancied
colts for the 2018 Classics have been nominated to start off their campaigns
here. Saxon Warrior, Gustav Klimt and a whole host of top class colts have been
mentioned as likely runners and it is with great pleasure that Ballylinch Stud
can be associated with this race and day.
The P.W. McGrath Memorial Ballysax Stakes race is a trial race for various European classics. In 2016 the
winner was the Dermot Weld trained Harzand ridden by champion jockey Pat
Smullen. Harzand was the most recent winner to go on to a classic victory, the
winner of the Epsom Derby in 2016. However, the
2017 winner, Rekindling, trained by Joseph O’Brien recently achieved global
glory by winning the richest Handicap in the world, the Emirates Melbourne Cup.
addition to superb flat racing it is also Grand National Day which will be
staged at Aintree with the big race going to post at 5.15pm. This
is one of the most popular jumps race on the calendar as 40 runners take on the
daunting obstacles of Aintree's 30 Grand National fences over the course of
four and a half miles. Aintree Racecourse is expecting over 150,000 racegoers
over the three days of racing and we will be celebrating this race at
Leopardstown also with live coverage immediately after the last race here. Stay
