Sea The Stars confirmed his position as one of the greatest racehorses of all time when producing his best-ever performance to win the Tattersalls Millions Irish Champion Stakes at Leopardstown on Saturday. Despite his connections having agonised over whether to run him in the race due to the unsuitably soft ground all week, the decision to run was handsomely rewarded as the son of Cape Cross blew away his top-class opposition with a performance that simply oozed class. Despite having no less than five Aidan O’Brien-trained runners to contend with, which included the multiple Group 1-winners Mastercraftsman and Fame And Glory, Mick Kinane was always in cruise control on the eventual winner, taking up the running under hands-and-heels riding and stretching right away to win by 2½ lengths. It was a result that was greeted with rapturous scenes of celebration from a crowd that clearly appreciated the class of the performance they had witnessed. The normally reserved John Oxx was moved to wax lyrical about his marvellous horse and wherever he chooses to run his star three-year-old next, the eyes of the racing world will be on him. The curtain raiser to the main event was the Group 1 Coolmore Fusaichi Pegasus Matron Stakes and it was the John Gosden-trained Rainbow View that took the prize for England. Ridden by Jimmy Fortune, the three-year-old took up the running over 1f out and stayed on strongly to beat off her fellow English raider, Heaven Sent, by two lengths.
